The short version

haptonic runs entirely on your iPhone. The app has no account, server, tracking, or analytics software. It stores your settings on your device and in any iPhone backup you choose to make. Apple separately handles TestFlight and optional device analytics, as explained below.

I am Jeremie Lim, the independent developer behind haptonic. I am based in the United States.

What haptonic stores on your device

The app remembers four things:

  • the instrument you used last,
  • your tuning values for each instrument,
  • your volume for each instrument,
  • whether the introduction has already run.

These settings live on your device and are included in any iPhone backup you make. Deleting haptonic removes its on-device copy. An existing backup may still contain the settings, but I cannot access it.

What haptonic does not do

  • No account, and no way to make one.
  • No network connection. The app does not talk to any server, mine or anyone else's.
  • No analytics or tracking SDKs, and no advertising.
  • No location, contacts, photos, health data, or microphone access.
  • No inference about your mood, attention, or state.
  • I do not sell personal information or share it for advertising.

Motion and sensors

While haptonic is open, it reads your device's motion sensors. Ballast and Flux use them to drive their physics, and some surfaces tilt their lighting as the phone moves. The readings are used in the moment and never stored or transmitted. iOS does not show a permission prompt for these sensors.

What Apple handles

Analytics and crash reports. If you have turned on sharing analytics with developers in your iOS settings, Apple collects usage and crash information and shares reports with me. Apple says this information does not identify you personally. You control sharing in Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements.

TestFlight. While haptonic is in beta, Apple passes me the feedback, screenshots, and email address of testers who send feedback. I use it to fix things and nothing else.

Apple's handling of all of this is covered by Apple's privacy policy.

If you email me

If you email me, I receive your address and whatever you write.

I use it only to reply, do not add it to a mailing list, and delete it after 24 months. You can ask me to delete it sooner.

Google hosts my email, so it processes and stores the message for me. I do not share it with anyone else.

If you fill in the beta form

While haptonic is in beta, I run a short web form to recruit volunteers for a seven-day diary study. The form is not part of the app.

It asks for your email address, a name to call you if you want to give one, and a few questions about your phone and how you fidget. Tally hosts the form, so your answers are stored on Tally's servers and Tally processes them for me.

I use the answers only to choose the diary group and to write back to everyone who applied, either way. They do not go into a mailing list or an advertising tool, and the app never sees them. I delete every answer within 90 days of the study ending, and sooner if you ask.

Children

haptonic is a general-audience app. The app does not collect personal information from anyone, including children. If a child emails me or sends TestFlight feedback, I handle it as described above.

Your rights

I cannot access the settings haptonic keeps on your device or in your backup. For information you send me by email, through the beta form, or through TestFlight, you can ask what I have, request a copy, or ask me to correct or delete it. I do not sell personal information or share it for advertising, and I will not treat you differently for making a request.

Email haptonicapp@gmail.com to make a request.

Information leaving your country

I am based in the United States. If you contact me from another country, your message may be handled in the United States. haptonic itself sends no data off your device. Apple may separately handle your backups, optional analytics, and TestFlight feedback; Google hosts my email, and Tally hosts the beta form.

If haptonic changes hands

If the app is ever sold or transferred to someone else, the support inbox goes with it, and any beta form answers I still hold are deleted rather than handed over. I would say so here and in the app's release notes before the transfer, and you could ask me to delete your messages first.

Changes to this policy

If I change this policy in a way that matters, I will say so in the app's release notes rather than quietly editing this page. The date this version took effect is at the top.

Contact

Email haptonicapp@gmail.com for anything at all — questions, complaints, or a request about your information. If you need a postal address in order to send a formal legal notice, ask and I will give you one.
